xvi   DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE-INSURANCE BRANCH.

The expenditure of the same companies during the same period of twenty-one years amounted in the aggregate to the sum of 876,818,578.19, thus showing an excess of expenditure over income to the amount of 81,217,7 7 9.44. The amounts expended in the respective years and their distribution under proper headings, are given in the following table :-

INLAND NAVIGATDON AND OCEAN MARINE INSURANCE, 1895.

Including the Canadian inland marine business of the British and Foreign Marine, the Reliance Marine, the London Assurance and the "Etna, and the whole inland marine and ocean business done by the two Canadian companies, the following are the results of the year :   

Inland Navigation.

Premiums received, 8526,965 ; losses incurred, 8590,397, of which were paid 8493,276, leaving a balance of 897,121 of them still unsettled. There was also paid during the year the sum of 881,938 on account of losses incurred in previous years, making the total payments (luring the year, on account of losses, 8575,214, while the total outstanding or unsettled losses at the end of the year were 897,476.

 

Ocean Marine.

Premiums received, 8196,145 ; losses incurred, 8193,391, of which were paid 8154,620, leaving a balance of 838,771 of them still unsettled. There was also paid during the year 89,958 on account of losses incurred in previous years, making the total
