The American Insurance Union Citadel, in Columbus, Ohio,
one of the five tallest buildings in the world, and the highest
building west of New York City, lifts its magnificent tower
555.5 feet in the air, forming a background for the new Colum-
bus Civic Center soon to take form on the banks of the Scioto
River.
The 65-story building, a unique example of the latest com-
mercialized Gothic architecture, was designed by C. Howard
Crane, a nationally known architect of Detroit. Colossal
figures and ornaments decorate the tower, some weighing many
tons and measuring more than 30 feet in height.
One of the many features of interest is the Hall of Mirrors in
the west wing, an exact replica of the famous Hall of Mirrors
at Versailles.
In architectural beauty it will be unsurpassed by anything
of its kind in the United States.
In addition to the National Office of the American Insurance
Union, the building will house the Keith-Albee Theatre, seat-
ing 3100 people, and will furnish additional rooms for the Desh-
ler Hotel, giving it 1000 rooms.
