Two companies show an excess of expenditures, the amount being $49,405.77. The total premium receipts for 1887 were $100,584,162.12 ; for 1886, .$88,726,914.93.

 

EXPENDITURES.

Table No. V shows the expenditures of the year to have been $93,447,289.22, an increase of $11,128,193.06, compared with the preceeding year. Of this amount $42,827,053.77 was paid for losses and claims; $10,413,878.71 for lapsed and surrendered policies; $14,852,624.48 in dividends to policy-holders; $322,632 in dividends to stockholders; $12,068,334.72 for commissions; $5,544,435.09 for salaries and medical examiners' fees, and $7,418,330.45 for miscellaneous purposes. This classification shows that $68,093,550.96 was paid to policy-holders, while the cost of management, including dividends to stockholders; was $25,353,732.26.

POLICY RECORD.

Table No. VI presents the policy record for 1887. The New York State companies issued 104,661 policies, insuring $363,238,701, and terminated 51,360 policies, insuring $181,004,329. The companies of other States issued 70,014 policies, insuring $167,932,082, and terminated 41,943 policies, insuring $98,085,070. The aggregates of the above are 174,675 policies issued, insuring $531,170,783, and 93,303 policies terminated, insuring $279,089,399. Compared with 1886, it appears that the companies issued 23,573 policies more last year, and increased the amount of insurance $82,656,541. There were 9,327 more policies terminated in 1887 than in 1886, and $35,046,173 more
