Family history health issues can prevent people in otherwise excellent health from qualifying for the lowest life insurance rates. Every competitive life insurance company takes family history into consideration when determining the rate class for which you’ll qualify.
The best insurance companies for family history issues only consider heart or cardiovascular DEATHS in your parents prior to their age 60 or 65 when determining your rate. These insurance companies are NOT concerned with family history of Cancer or other familial diseases, nor do they consider the health of your siblings.
The worst life insurance family history companies consider any diagnosis of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke in your parents and siblings when determining your rate.
The age when your family members were diagnosed with the above diseases is also a major consideration for insurance companies. Some companies are only concerned with family history issues before the family member’s age 60. Others are concerned up to age 65 and at least one competitive insurance company is concerned with family history up to age 70.
The better insurance companies for family history are only concerned with family member deaths before a certain age. Other companies care about the age of diagnosis of the disease, even if the family member is still living.
We have been able to get exceptions on life insurance family history issues when the person applying had tests that rule out the familial disease or has outstanding health otherwise and we have pushed for the exception.
For example, if your father died of a heart attack in his 40’s and you are over age 40 when applying for insurance and have had full cardiology work up (stress test, thallium stress, etc) that rules out heart disease, you may be able to qualify for the lowest rate class with some insurance companies.
If you’re older than age 60 or 65, a few insurance companies will not take your family history into consideration when determining the rate for which you’ll qualify. So your family history would not be an issue with these co’s.
